Just ordered a ‘New Apple TV’

Since last friday the 'New Apple TV' is added to the Apple Store in the Netherlands. Because of the lack of 1080p playback on the ATV2 (output may be a better word...) I've ordered it right away. When it drops at my doorstep I'll jailbreak it (if it's available at that time, for now there is only a jailbreak for iOS 5.1 on ATV2) and try running XBMC for iOS.

The delivery date is set on March 28. Check back next week to read about installing XBMC on the New Apple TV.

Whats new in the 3th generation Apple TV? This is what Apple says a there website; http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html. But what is new under the hood? A user at the XBMC forums teared it apart and posted the following facts; http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=125840

The most outstanding upgrade (next to the ability to output 1080p) is the bump to 512 MB RAM (the first and second generation came with 256MB) and the Apple A5 cpu (same as the one in the iPad2 and iPhone 4S but with only one core), I think this will solve some hick ups in large file playback in XBMC but this is not confirmed yet.

  1. Hi Rob, I’m Dutch but I’ll write in English for the world to understand.

    I’m a pretty avid reader of your blog for the Synology stuff (I’m a proud owner of the 1511+) but never really commented. Until now after seeing that you’re also an Apple TV fan. Good times!

    Anyway, I’m currently using a AC Ryan PlayOn to stream from the Synology and I am interested in replacing it with the Apple TV 3. The main reluctance is that I’m not sure if the new Apple TV does all the same stuff the PlayOn does (codecs and such).

    So basically: does it? Does the Apple TV play anything I throw at it? even .ISO and .MKV?

    Jail breaking is an option for me and I would love to run XBMC 11 on it using it’s fast A5. Will that work?

    Thanks for the blog!

    • Hi Gerben,

      For now it’s a simple answer; No, it can’t… The out-of-the-box ATV3 will play only formats witch iTunes supports;

      – H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

      – MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

      -Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

      So if you’re looking to replace your PlayOn you’ll have to wait for a jailbreak for the ATV3.

  2. “yes it’s possible already but only thetered witch means you’ll have to boot the ATV with your PC or Mac”
